Each year, Bonnie Plants distributes free cabbage plants to third graders across the country (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) to foster an interest in gardening and the environment. Students each get their own cabbage plant to take care of and harvest. These cabbages have oversized heads, making the process even more exciting for children.
As part of the program, Bonnie Plants gives a scholarship to one student in each state to use towards education. Teachers select the winner in their class based on size and maturity, and submit it to Bonnie Plants with a good quality photograph (preferably digital).
Start the registration process by filling in your zip code in the online registration field. This will locate the closest growing station and provide you with deadlines and delivery times for your area. After you register for plants, a Bonnie Plants representative from the nearby growing station will contact you.
Bonnie Plants worked with a third-grade teacher to develop lesson plans appropriate for students in grade 3 classrooms across the country. These lesson plans take into consideration the teaching requirements for grade 3 in subjects such as mathematics, science, health/nutrition, and social studies. Each lesson plan includes instructions for teachers and sample worksheets for students. Lesson plans are available on the website.
The entry deadline is September 30, annually.
