LA84 Foundation

Information

The LA84 Foundation is endowed through surplus funds from the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Its mission is to make grants to support program costs, sports equipment, and the renovation of sports facilities or refurbishment of fields of play.
A variety of sports for a broad range of youth are funded, but special consideration is given to two key priority areas:
1. School-based Sports Programs: Grant making in this area seeks to provide youth, particularly in communities that are under-resourced, with maximum access to sports opportunities in a place where they spend most of their day.
2. Girls in Sports: Grant making in this area is designed to increase participation as way to promote leadership through sports and coaching opportunities.
It is important to note that the foundation is not exclusively funding these two types of youth sports programs. However, LA84 has identified these two areas as a priority, while still supporting a broad range of youth sports.
Whether funding priority programs or other types of youth sport opportunities, the LA84 Foundation is guided by the following principles.
  • Sport is an effective tool in positive youth development.
  • Sport can improve the lives of young people through positive social-emotional, health, and educational outcomes, and has important life-long impacts.
  • Coaching education greatly improves the sport experience for young people and youth development outcomes.
  • No sport is risk free, but the health and safety of young athletes is a top priority.
  • Sport and grantmaking have impact. LA84 expects to work more closely with grantees to understand their programmatic outcomes and successes to gain a more comprehensive picture of the impact of the foundation’s grantmaking.

Eligibility

Organizations must provide structured sports activities for youth ages 6 – 17

Organizations must provide programs and activities in one of Southern California’s eight counties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, or Ventura

Organizations must be certified as tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code and not as a private foundation, as defined in section 509(a) of that code

Organizations must be in good standing with the California Franchise Tax Board through the California Secretary of State

Organizations must have a written policy that addresses its commitment to keep children safe from sexual abuse by preventing, recognizing, and responding to situations that in any way compromise their safety, both on and off the playing field.

Youth Safety: If you are applying for a grant to support any of the following sports, please review additional guidelines: Soccer, Hockey, Lacrosse, Boxing, Rugby, Football or Martial Arts.

The LA84 Foundation accepts applications at any time throughout the year. There are two phases of the application, with Phase I review completed in within eight weeks.
